No questions, BT is one of the biggest broadband suppliers in the UK and keeping up with speed demands in this country is a ongoing battle to supply everyone with much faster broadband and to help this cause, BT has automatically boosted the speed of the BT Infinity 1 fibre package, which is the basic Infinity package BT sell, increasing the speed from 38 to 52mbps – giving a 32% speed increase. This move is all and effort for BT to stay relevant in the market, as now it’s becoming a very crowded space with TalkTalk, Sky, Plusnet, Virgin and all the mobile operators such as O2, Vodafone and EE offering packages.

Not all rosy

What BT isn’t making clear is that if your plan is a 38Mbps package and you’re only seeing 20 or less then this upgrade wont make any difference, only customers which are consistently seeing 35-38Mbps will see the speed jump.

Other ISPs could offer it too

Sky and TalkTalk could potentially offer this package too, as they share the same Openreach network backbone as BT so this wont be a BT exclusive for long. Virgin is also making strides mostly in the business sector, with plans that go up to 300Mbps and above if you’re willing to pay for it.

The details

What if I’m a current customer?

Existing BT customers can get this upgrade for free, the only thing to do is contact BT and renew your contract, tying you in for another 12 or 24 months.

I’m new to BT, how much does this cost?

If you’re new to BT then the Infinity 1 plan starts at £10 per month with a 25GB data cap and then only £12.50 per month for a unlimited data plan. Both packages have a £18 per month line rental and a one time £49 activation fee.
