Apple has had CarPlay around for a number of years now. It was originally announced at the 2013 WWDC alongside iOS 7, dubbed iOS in the Car at the time it has taken a while to catch on, but as it stands 2016 looks to be the year of the next generation of in car infotainment systems. Both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are becoming very popular this year with big car companies such as Ferrari, Ford, Vauxhall and Skoda supporting CarPlay. But now later this year it looks like BMW will be adding support later this year for the X5M and X6M performance SUV models.

One user from Bimmerpost (via 9to5Mac) found some details outlining CarPlay in a BMW brochure:

Enables wireless and convenient use of the iPhone in your vehicle via Apple CarPlay. Smartphone content such as music, messages / SMS, telephony, selected third-party apps and navigation can thus be displayed and operated seamlessly from the panel of the vehicle. Compatibility and the functionality of your iPhone with Apple CarPlay depends on the model year of the iPhone and the software version installed on it.

CarPlay on BMW cars is expected to launch later this year.
