You may not have heard of WeChat, but the messaging app is one of the most popular social media platforms in China. It’s popularity is huge – with over 768 million daily active users now using it.

This information comes in a report from Tencent, a Chinese firm who specialise in media and mobile phone investments. They found that around half of all WeChat users spend around 90 minutes per day using the service. They also found the average age, typical users of WeChat are born between the 1980s and 1990s. Also the volume that messages are being sent has increased massively – in 2016 messages sent using WeChat were 67% greater than 2015 and most users send around 74 messages a day.

Carrier competitor

What’s even more amazing than the amount of users WeChat has – is that the service is now exceeding the usage volume for phone calls than that of the carriers in China.

In the same report, Tencent revealed the amunt of calls that WeChat handles.

More calls are now being made using WeChat than the top carriers in China, last year 100 million voice and video calls were made every day, an increase of 180% over 2015.
