Today Samsung has unveiled the new Galaxy S8 flagship phone for 2017, with the new Infinity Display which is ultra wide and takes nearly the whole front of the phone, also the impressive processor and specs. It’ll be on sale on April 28th and you can pre-order it today.

The long and short

What is it?

Samsung’s new answer to the upcoming iPhone, the Galaxy S8

When can I buy it?

The new phone will be available from April 28th and you can pre-order today.

Whats new?

Samsung is being extremely ambitious with this model, it boasts a new Infinity Display (after the break for more on what that is). It comes in two sizes like the S7, 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch and both models feature a curved display. Also a new home button, which is moulded into the screen.

All about the S8

Today Samsung have seriously stepped up their game, the company will be attempting to win back the consumers following the exploding phone issue late last year, but personally I think most people have forgotten that by now. The new Galaxy S8 is the company’s big response to the iPhone 7 and also to help them potentially compete with the upcoming iPhone 8 which should be launching this September.

The new ‘Infinity Display’ on the Galaxy S8

So what has Samsung done differently this time around? Well as rumours predicted, the Galaxy S8 features a brand new screen dubbed the ‘Infinity Display’ – this practically makes the phone look bezel-less, with a curved screen. This time around there won’t be a separate model for a curved screen, both the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will be curved.

Specs

The Galaxy S8 comes in two models the 5.8-inch S8 and the 6.2-inch S8+. That new screen has a resolution of 2960 x 1440 and it’s now rated as a Mobile HDR screen, meaning it has the capacity to show high dynamic range video and photos.

Both models have the same internals, the processor is by Qualcomm with the Snapdragon 835 paired with 4GB of RAM. The smaller phone has a large 3,000 man battery and the S8+ has a 3,500 mAh offering.

Fans will be relieved as the microSD card slot is back, with the S7 Samsung did remove this but it has been brought back.

On the base of the phone, Samsung has opted to keep the 3.5mm headphone jack and avoid the complaints.

Camera

The rear facing camera is 12MP this time around, with optical image stabilisation on both models and a 8MP front facing selfie camera.

Pricing and availability

The phone will go on sale at the end of April, on the 28th and customers can pre-order from today and if you do, you’ll received the phone a week earlier to everyone else.

Samsung is also pricing this as a high end luxury phone, the Galaxy S8 will start at £689 and the S8+ starts art £779 which is only slightly cheaper than the iPhone. It comes in three colours, Midnight Black, Orchid Grey and Arctic Silver. However in the UK we might not get the silver option.
