Apple Maps is still a bit of ways behind Google Maps in terms of the amount of information it holds about businesses and also cycling information, but Apple is always improving the accuracy of it’s mapping software and also what points of interest it can show.
As a lot of the automotive industry is turning towards electric vehicles, with Tesla leading the charge (pun not intended) – Apple has added support for showing local EV chargers for electric car owners in the UK. Apple Maps users in the US have had access to this feature for the past four months, with data coming from ChargePoint.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has teamed up with Moovility, who is owned by German firm Cirrantic. The service hosts a large database of Tesla Superchargers, Ecotricity and other charging stations around the UK to add the information into Apple Maps.
“We think that consistent, live information of the growing charger infrastructure increases the confidence of EV drivers and, especially with Apple Maps, attracts new user groups to sustainable mobility offerings like EV cars.”
Arne Meusel, CEO and co-founder of Cirrantic
How does this information appear in Maps?
Like any business on Apple Maps, the EV charger locations have business cards.
Expanding the card for the point of interest shows how much parking is available, what cars they can charge and power they offer.
It’s not just electric car charging points Apple is adding, popping up in Maps search results are public bicycle locations in London, New York and Paris.
