At this years E3 gaming conference, Microsoft took the stage yesterday to unveil the next big hardware update to the Xbox One. For quite a while now, it’s been rumoured that Microsoft had been working on more more powerful console to rival Sony’s PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles.

Dubbed “Project Scorpio” for a long time and even referred to by Microsoft on its website, the Xbox One X is much more capable, offers compatibly with older games, accessories and supports full 4K resolution for games and Blu-Ray discs.

The Xbox One X was announced on stage by Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox team yesterday at the annual E3 gaming conference, the console will launch later this year in November starting at $499.

The new Xbox sports ‘true 4K’ resolution for games, such as the newly announced Forza Motorsport 7 and 4K films using Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

Specs

The specs of the new console impress the most, the Xbox One has more graphical compute power than its main rival the PS4 Pro, at 6 teraflops of power, the PS4 currently has 4.2. Driving the graphics is a custom engine for the GPU, running at 1172MHz, the old Xbox One has 853Mhz.

For the ports and overall size – Microsoft has based the Xbox One X on the current Xbox One S – with the same overall size, however Microsoft say this is the “smallest Xbox ever.” For ports it features one HDMI-in port and it loses the standalone Kinect port.

Price and availability

The new Xbox One X will go on sale on November 7th for $499 in the US / £449 in the UK / €499 in Europe / $649 in Australia / $599 in Canada
