This week, at CES 2019 Amazon has revealed that the Amazon Fire TV platform now has over 30 million active users worldwide, which now puts Amazon in the lead when it comes to streaming devices.

The total figure is likely to include all the models in the Fire TV family, i.e Fire TV Stick, Fire TV and the Fire TV Cube. As of writing, it is unclear if it does includes users of the ‘Fire TV Edition smart TVs’ – these are TVs which run the Fire TV operating system out of the box.

Growth

The news came from CNET after they interviewed Marc Whitten from Amazon at CES this year. Marc mentioned that user base figure could increase in the next few weeks, as customers who purchased Fire TV units over christmas and new year may have not set them up yet.

“We’re still in the middle of the ‘buy’ to ‘turn on’ period from the holiday shopping season”

Marc Whitten – Head of Fire TV at Amazon

The growth of users since October 2018 is huge, back then Amazon announced that they had about 25 million users of Amazon Fire TV. This recent spurt in new users puts Amazon at the top, as just this week Roku revealed that it has 27 million active users. In the streaming media market place for America, Roku is thought of as the most popular devices.
