Back at the Apple event in March this year, Apple unveiled its new Apple TV+ service, Apple Arcade and Apple News+, the magazine and newspaper subscription. But along side the new Apple TV service, it was revealed that Apple would be redesigning the Apple TV app too later on, in May.

What’s new?

Along with the new TV app, which we cover further down in the post, iOS 12.3 also includes some improvements to AirPlay 2, adding in support for AirPlay 2 TVs as well as including the option to AirPlay right from the Siri Suggestion.

Also iOS 12.3 “Addresses an issue that could cause calls made using Wi-Fi calling to drop” and “Apple Music’s For You tab now updates multiple times a day suggesting music based on themes like genres, artists, and moods you love.”

New look TV app

The new TV app has shipped as part of iOS 12.3, tvOS 12.3 and also on some Samsung Smart TV models from the past few years. That support should come via a firmware update for Samsung TVs.

Highlight features in the new app include:

The Apple TV app features an all new design that highlights expertly curated collections and personalized recommendations

The Apple TV app can now intelligently suggest playing to the most likely Apple TVs or AirPlay 2-enabled TVs nearby

Apple

Most of iOS 12.3 is dedicated to the new TV app, which has been fully redesigned with the “Watch Now” and “Up Next” features still up and front to be accessible.

The new app on tvOS and iOS has been simplified with clearer categories for TV shows, sports channels and kids.

Also new is “Channels” which is being pushed as a way to easily subscribe and sign up to services, right from within the TV app – without having to navigate out to another separate app from the provider.

All your purchased iTunes films and tv shows all live within the TV app too, and you can purchase new ones from the iTunes Store from within the app.

How do I download iOS 12.3?

Like any update since iOS 5, you have two options on how to update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

1. You can visit Settings > General > Software Update and then follow through the steps to download and install the new iOS update.

2. Plug your iPhone or iPad into a Mac or Windows computer with iTunes installed and update that way, this may take slightly longer as it downloads an entire copy of the operating system – then proceeds to back up and install.
