WWDC 19 was yesterday and we’re still uncovering all the news here. Along with iOS 13, watchOS 6, iPadOS and macOS Catalina Apple also revealed a small, but useful update for Apple TV.

tvOS 13 isn’t a large update, but it does had a host of new and useful additions for Apple TV users.


tvOS 13 – as quick as possible

  • What is it? –This is tvOS 13, a new OS update for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K devices.
  • When is it being released? – As usual with Apple’s recent software releases, they get announced in June at WWDC and then released in September.
  • Will my device work with tvOS? If you have one of the newer Apple TV models, the ones with the App Store and the new Siri remote then it will work with tvOS 13 when it is released. That’s Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.

Whats new?

Third Party Game Controllers

Now for the first time, Apple is adding in support for third party game controllers, with Xbox One S controller and the PlayStation Dualshock 4 now compatible. Once Apple Arcade is released later this year this should make games easier to access.

Screen Savers

With tvOS 12, Apple offered up loads of amazing screensavers from the International Space Station, now with tvOS 13 Apple is going under the sea. The BBC National History Unit has worked with Apple on filming them with the team behind “Blue Planet”.

Apple Music

Apple is making Apple TV much more friendly for families and offices, with multi-user support. Apple Music takes advantage of this with a new Control Centre users can switch to their own profile.

Home Screen

tvOS 13 makes the Home Screen much more full-screen, so apps can now play full-screen video previews on the Home screen.

Multi-user support

Apple has an all new Control Centre in tvOS 13, and this makes switching between users much easier. The TV app works with multiple users so everyone’s ‘Up Next’ queue is unique to them.

Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K are both supported.
