With watchOS 7, Apple had added a couple of new watch faces, including Chronograph Pro, X-Large and new Photos face. Chronograph Pro has more room for complications and X-Large can show one large complication.

Also with complications, Apple is now allowing one app to have multiple complications to choose from, useful for surfing apps and weather apps.

Watch faces can also be shared between users, apps can offer up special curated faces as can websites too.

Sleep tracking

Sleep tracking for the Apple Watch was rumoured to come with the Series 5 Apple Watch but in watchOS 7, it is here. Sleep Mode will automatically dim your iPhone and watch screen and enable Do Not Disturb too. Apple Watch can remind you to go to bed, and help you wind down before hand with Home scenes.

Once you wake up, you’ll see a chart on how long you were awake for in bed and asleep. Apple Watch will let you know what the weather is going to do that day and your battery level.

Apple is recommending to charge your Apple Watch before you go to bed if it is below 30% and once you wake up while you are getting ready. iPhone will let you know once the watch hits 100%.

New workouts and fitness

Apple has renamed the Activity app to ‘Fitness’ in iOS 14 and watchOS 7 and Apple has also cleaned up the app in iOS and added three new workouts, Dance, Functional Strength Training and Core Training.

Maps

Like in iOS 14, Apple has added some new Maps features, including cycling routes and navigation.

Health

As always, Apple is focusing on health on the Apple Watch and we have new features in watchOS 7 for hand washing and hearing health.

Handwashing is very important and even more so in these current times, with watchOS 7 the Apple Watch now has automatic detection for hand washing, using the accelerometer and microphone to detect when you are washing your hands, then start a 20 second timer. Apple Watch can even remind you to wash your hands when you get home.

For hearing health, Apple Watch can lower your volume automatically based on what the WHO recommends and you can now set a maximum volume for headphones.

What Apple Watches can run watchOS 7?

Apple is dropping support for the Series 1 and Series 2 Apple Watch models and now only the Series 3, Series 4 and Series 5 will be able to run watchOS 7.
