Today Ubiquiti has launched the new G4 Doorbell for use with the UniFi Protect system, the G4 Doorbell is the first doorbell from Ubiquiti and within Protect it operates like any other camera, with motion zones, events, alerts and more. It has a 5MP sensor with a resolution of 1600 x 1200, 2MP HD at 30 FPS for streaming.

In terms of unique doorbell esque features, the G4 Doorbell has entrance lighting which comes on when people walk up to it, as well as a customisable screen which could be used to tell the delivery driver where to leave the package for instance. It has also has two way audio, similar to Ring and the G3 Micro and it is weather resistant.

However what with being the first doorbell Ubiquiti has made, this one lacks PoE which might turn some customers away, instead it relies on existing doorbell wiring and uses 802.11ac dual band WiFi for connectivity.

The G4 Doorbell is up on Ubiquiti’s store for $199 on store.ui.com and it is currently out of stock. Europe and UK avaiblity is likely to show up in the coming weeks.

UniFi Protect

For those unfamiliar with UniFi Protect, it doesn’t use the Cloud for storage or communication – making it the choice for privacy concerned users. Instead an on premise appliance, be it the UDM-Pro, Cloud Key Gen2+ or the new UNVR-4 has to be used and your videos live on your device. For external access, no port forwarding is needed, Ubiquiti’s cloud handles the initiation handshake and your data goes directly from your device at home to your phone, iPad or computer when viewing it remotely.

The other benefit is the bandwidth savings, quite a lot of people don’t have much upstream bandwidth, sometimes 1-5mbps on ADSL. As the videos are stored locally, your upload capacity isn’t affected.
