Next year, Twitter is relaunching its account verification process after a four year absence. The process was shut down in 2017 due to issues with who was being verified and for what reason, such as multiple white supremacists who had received verification. When the program gets reintroduced in 2021, they’ll be new rules in place on who gets verified which are in a draft form at the moment.

“Please note that our verified account program is currently on hold. We are not accepting any new requests at this time, however we plan to make it possible to apply for a verified badge starting in 2021.”

Back in June, Jane Manchun Wong discovered that the company was planning on bringing the feature back for users to request accounts to be verified.

When the program does launch again, they’ll be just six types of accounts that’ll be verified, those include news outlets, sports, government officials, brands/nonprofits, entertainment and activists.

Twitter is planning on announcing a final version of the requirements next month on the 17th December with a full launch in early 2021.
