In the grand scheme of things, Disney+ didn’t launch that long ago, here in the UK in launched less than a year ago in March 2020, a few weeks into the coronavirus lockdown and in the US a little over a year, as it launched back in November 2019. It that time it has just under half of the paying subscriber base that Netflix has, Disney+ has 94.9 million subscribers who pay and Netflix has 200 million subscribers as of January 2021, which was when last the company revealed its statistics.

When Disney+ was launched, the company had some predications for how many subscribers it would gain by the year 2024, which looking back at now seem very small. At launch Disney said that the service would have 60 million to 90 million subscribers by 2024. Disney has now said it expects to have 230 to 260 million subscribers by 2024.

The popularity and demand can be attributed to a good price point, in the UK it is £5.99 per month, having a lot of kit friendly content and for the right age groups, a single and easy place to access nostalgic content from their childhoods, couple that with the pandemic and more free time on people’s hands, Disney+ has grown significantly since its launch. The service is also availble on nearly every device, iOS, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android, Google Chromecast with Google TV as well as Xbox too.
