SpaceX launched its low orbit satellite service, Starlink to the US and UK in beta form recently and the latency and speeds are very good for a satellite based serviced, with speeds around 150Mbps and latency of 20-30ms. However CEO Elon Musk has said that the speeds will almost double to 300Mbps sometime in 2021.

Latency will be dropped too from the 20-40ms in the beta phase to under 20ms by summer 2021, Elon also said. The main effort for Starlink is to provide a better and for some people in rural areas, actually make the broadband service usable, so in areas the US such as Los Angles the availability will be limited as those areas are served already by fibre based internet.

So far, Starlink has 10,000 users based in the US and other countries. Earlier this month, the company started taking pre-orders as previously it was in an invitation based.
