For a long time, the top two desktop operating systems in the world have been Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS. However despite a very popular and well received launch of the new range of M1 Macs last year, Apple’s place has now been relegated to third place now sitting behind Google Chrome OS, which powers Chomebooks and Chromeboxes.

Windows is still way out in front, at 80.5% market share worldwide, Chrome OS is now 10.8% and macOS is 7.5%. This all changed in 2020 due to the popularity of Chromebooks in mainly the education market, thanks to their low maintenance needs and favourable pricing for schools.

However despite the current percentages, Apple’s market share for the Mac actually increased in 2020, climbing from 6.7% to 7.5%. It was Windows which lost some market share, dropping from 85.4% to 80.5% but Chrome OS jumped a lot, from 6.4% to 10.8%.
