Ford has announced the new Ford Maverick pickup truck, reusing a name once used in the 1970s for a small car and then here in Europe for a SUV that was based on a Nissan Terran. This all new truck however joins Fords expanding pickup truck line up at the entry level model, below the Ranger.

The Ford Maverick will only be available in the US and it’s the first pickup truck in the country that has full hybrid option. In terms of size, its smaller than the Ranger which is the only Ford pickup on sale in the UK. The Maverick is 5072mm long and 1745mm tall, with the Ranger being 282mm longer and 71mm taller.

Powering the Maverick is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 192bhp and 155lb ft of torque. Ford also say that in the city, the Maverick is more fuel efficient than a Honda Civic. Ford is claiming 40mpg in the city and a range of 500 miles per tank. There will be a more powerful engine on sale too, with 250bhp and 277lb ft of torque – however Ford hasn’t revealed any efficiency data on this model yet.

Inside the Maverick is what looks to be a well appointed interior, with an 8-inch infotainment screen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard XL trim has this screen as standard as well as a 4G WiFi hotspot, support for FordPass and two 12v sockets in the bed.

Jumping up to the XLT adds some extra tie down points in the bed, as well as 17-inch aluminium wheels and a power locking tailgate.

The Lariat trim adds a leather steering wheel, keyless entry and interior ambient lighting.

Ford is offering a First Edition trim too, with a redesigned bonnet, black roof, 18-inch alloys and an AWD option, which comes with all terrain tyres.

“The Maverick product proposition is like nothing else out there. It’s a great-looking truck featuring four doors with room for five adults and a standard full hybrid engine with city fuel economy that beats a Honda Civic, and it starts at under $20,000.”

Todd Eckert – Ford Truck Group marketing manager

The Maverick is due to go on sale in the US only this autumn with prices starting at $19,995 (£14,150) for the XL. XLT jumps up to $22,280 and the Lariat at $25,490. Ford is taking reservations now at ford.com.
