This week, Volkswagen has announced a new estate version of the eighth generation Golf R for 2021 with similar performance stats to the hatchback variant. The new Golf R estate joins the Golf, Tiguan and Arteon with performance focused models.

The estate version shares the same engine as the hatchback, with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, with 316bhp and 309lb ft of torque. The four wheel drive ‘4Motion’ and seven speed DSG system. The 0-60mph time is a bit more than the hatchback version, at 4.9 seconds which is 0.2 seconds more, the top speed is the same at 155mph.

Like the standard hatchback Golf R, the estate version gets the usual R treatment, with lowered suspension, adaptive chassis control, larger 18-inch alloy wheels, blue break callipers, silver door mirrors as well as a performance body kit. Volkswagen is offering one optional extra with the ‘R performance pack.’

The pack allows the top speed restriction to be upped from 155mph to 167mph, adds larger 19-inch alloy wheels as well as adding a ‘Special’ driving mode, tuning for the Nürburgring and a Drift mode.
