Earlier this month, Toshiba and Insignia have updated their smart TVs with support for HomeKit and AirPlay 2. Both companies make some Fire TV branded smart TVs, which run the Fire TV operating system, nearly identical to what comes on a Fire TV Stick. The HomeKit support allows the Home app on macOS, iPadOS and iPhone to control the TV, such as turning it on, changing volume and input – and of course, this can be automated completely too.

AirPlay is enabled by default and you can send any content from Apple devices, be it a video, photo or music direct to the TV without needing a separate Apple TV. AirPlay 2 support means the TV can be part of a whole home audio system with HomePods and other AirPlay 2 speakers.

Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit is supported on the Toshiba and Insignia 4K UHD Smart Fire TVs, but only the 2020 models. Support comes via a free software update.
