Apple has today announced its new generation of MacBook Pro, following on from the version from 2016 – this is the first full redesign since then. The last generation caught a lot of flack for the keyboard, which was fixed a couple of years later, but it also added the Touch Bar and removed a lot of ports.
The new generation revealed today has more of a retro look, with an industrial look, with a heavier and more chunkier design. Ports have made a comeback, such as MagSafe, HDMI and a full size SD card slot, even the faithful old 3.5mm headphone jack gets support for high fidelity headphones.
There are two models, the 14-inch which actually has a 14.2-inch screen and the 16-inch model, which has a 16.2-inch screen. Sitting above the screen is a notch, which houses the new 1080p webcam.
The controversial Touch Bar is also gone on the new models, in its place is a full height function row, with a dedicated Touch ID button, like the M1 iMac.
The new larger screens are also capable of supporting ProMotion, up to 120hz like the new iPhone 13 Pro and iPad Pro models.
Inside is where the new MacBooks have really changed, with the new M1 Pro chip and the M1 Max chip. The M1 Pro builds upon the M1 from last year, with an 8-core or 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU and up to 32GB of unified memory, a shared pool for the GPU and the CPU. The M1 Max goes even further, with a 24-core or 32-core GPU and up to 64GB of unified shared memory.
The new MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch are available to pre-order from today. Prices start at £1,899 in the UK and $1,999 in the US.
