Today, Motorola released three brand new phones; two new Moto X models and a refreshed Moto G. The Moto X flagship now comes in two different varieties, the Moto X Style and the Moto X Play. The Style looks to be designed to compete with the iPhone 6 and the Play may take on the iPhone 5c or Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. All three handsets look very good and well designed devices.

Moto X Style

The Moto X Style is huge – with a 5.7-inch LCD screen, which is edge to edge display it is certainly taking on the iPhone 6 Plus in a big way. The large screen is quad-HD and has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 and 520 ppi as well as front facing stereo speakers. The internals are very impressive with a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor and 3GB RAM.

The Moto X Style also has very new wireless technology with the latest Bluetooth 4.1, as seen in the new iPod touch and 802.11a/g/b/n/ac WiFi with MIMO. For mobile data it has 4G LTE Cat 6 which can support up to 300Mbps. Like nearly every Android phone, it has NFC.

The battery life seems to be pretty good on paper, with Motorola touting “all-day battery” with the iconic TurboPower for fast changing. It gives you an extra 10 hours of life in 15 minutes. The

his phone seems to have it all as the camera seems impressive on paper with a 21MP rear facing camera with fl2.0 aperture. It also has flash and can record video at 1080p with 60fps and 4K video at 30fps. Like the iPhone it also has slow motion video. The front camera (or selfie cam) has a large 5MP sensor with a flash. The camera also features Rapid focus.

Like every Motorola phone, it can be customised down to the finest detail, when purchasing the Moto Maker website can be used to choose between real leather, real wood, metallic metal with lots of colour options and silicon backplates, 18 different inlays and 7 different accents.

Also a nod towards Apple – this phone comes without junk software from the carrier when purchased from Motorola.

The phone comes in various storage options, very similar to the iPhone. It comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options, but to get 128GB, a microSD card needs to be used. It will sell between $200 and $300 but specify pricing and release dates have yet to be announced.

Moto X Play

The Moto X Play is the more durable phone of the two, with a more ruggedised and colourful body design. Motorola even describe that it “is ready for anything.” The Moto X Play has a smaller screen than the Moto X Style, at 5.5-inches it is on par with the iPhone 6 Plus. The screen is a 5.5-inch 1080 Full HD panel with 403ppi – like the Style, it is edge to edge with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080. The phone is also powered by a 1.6GHz octal-core Snapdragon 615 and 2GB RAM.

For wireless tech the Moto X Play doesn’t have all of the features of the Style with 802.11/a/g/b/n with dual band, but no ac and MIMO. It also has 4G LTE.

Again, customisation is key with Motorola devices and the Play can be changed using the Moto Maker website, this phone as fourteen different backs and seven accents. The camera, thankfully is the same as the Style with 21MP with 1080 video at 30fps.

The Moto X Play comes in 16GB and 32GB options with an option of 128GB using a microSD card. It will be available in August in counties in Europe, Latin America and Canada.

Moto G (2015)

The new Moto G is another refresh of the budget minded phone, this new version is now waterproof, faster and even more colourful.

With the specs, the new Moto G is now waterproof to IPX7 and has a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. It also has 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac WiFi but doesn’t have NFC. Something that probably hasn’t been in a phone before is the option to upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. The internal storage is based on microSD and supports up to 32GB.

The battery is 2,470 mAh and has a large 5-inch 720 LCD screen at 294 ppi – which is the same as the 2014 model. The camera isn’t the 21MP offering in the other two phones but it is 13MP which is capable of quick capture and 1080p video at 30fps. The front facing camera is 5MP. The new Moto G is available now for $179.99/£179.99 in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
